As we wrap a hugely eventful first month of 2024, there’s a palpable sense of momentum in talent acquisition and employer branding. With cautious optimism following recent volatility, opportunities feel ripe for progress after a stagnant close to 2023.
This month’s newsletter spotlights several talent topics – from embracing neurodiversity in hiring practices to strategising off-payroll workforces and keeping your employee value proposition fresh amidst shifts in candidate priorities.
We also celebrate the cream of the crop with a round of applause for 2024’s RAD Award victors – spearheading innovation in UK recruitment advertising.
Do enjoy this edition and let us know your thoughts! With so much on the talent & employer brand horizon this year, we welcome your perspectives as leaders. Here’s to the positive transformations ahead in 2024.
Supporting Neurodiverse Individuals in the Workplace:
As the father of a young boy with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), I often worry about the obstacles my son may face in eventually finding fulfilling work.
While clever and capable, changes to routines, sensory sensitivities and social dynamics can present challenges for neurodiverse individuals like him.
I recently learned of a 22-year-old local man with an ASD diagnosis. His work experiences reflected what I may expect for my son in future. Though this young man secured a role a few years ago with an accommodating small business owner, he unfortunately lost this job through no fault of his own after the owner sadly passed away and the business closed.
Most recently he secured an apprenticeship with a local cycle shop. However, though hardworking and reliable, struggling to interact fluidly with customers led to him not passing probation, despite the role being an apprentice mechanic.
Since then, despite directly approaching stores of major UK brands, inflexible online hiring processes have hindered his securing another opportunity.
The skills and dedication of neurodiverse people often go overlooked due to communication differences or needs for adjusted workplace environments. But given the right setting and empathy from colleagues and leaders, they make devoted, creative team members.

Managing Your Off-Payroll Talent Spend:
A recent GMZTAlent audit & diagnostic uncovered nearly £32 million in off-payroll expenditures over two years for a client. Whilst much of this was for essential IT and digital services projects, almost one-third represented contingent staffing.
Surprisingly, the client engaged 28 separate third-party suppliers to deliver these labour services without a managed services approach or centralised governance system for the flexible workforce.
As we elaborated in a December blog article, organisations increasingly access off-payroll employees for project-based needs or niche capabilities as talent fluidity rises. Though crucial for flexibility, lacking cohesion in programme management risks efficiency.
Key steps we recommend for optimising your off-payroll talent include:
- Consolidating Providers Where Possible: Working with fewer preferred suppliers increases compliance oversight and service consistency whilst reducing costs.
- Coordinating With a Management Partner: A dedicated managed service provider can oversee off-payroll talent engagement across divisions, ensuring governance adherence, data accessibility and budget alignment.
- Monitoring Programme Effectiveness: Analytics measuring programme performance metrics (cost, time to hire, retention levels) allows for continuous enhancements.
For many companies, off-payroll talent fills persistent skills gaps. Creating structure around this ecosystem is essential for maximising value whilst minimising risk. Our team would be delighted to share further advice on strategically optimising your flexible talent investments.
Keeping Your Employer Brand & EVP Relevant:
In years of talent audits for UK companies, our team at GMZTAlent observes a frustrating gap – static engagement models no longer provide the type of agile, real-time people analytics leaders now need.
Outdated surveys built for a previous era fail to cut through noise and decipher nuanced workforce trends. As a result, fast-scaling organisations lack tailored insights to evolve their employer brand and employee value proposition (EVP).
So how do you keep your employer brand messaging and employee experience aligned with modern talent priorities like diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I), purpose-driven leadership, hybrid working policies and skill mobility?
At GMZTAlent we’re addressing this challenge head-on with our latest innovation – CultureTrak. Still, in the early development stages, CultureTrak will be a SaaS-based people analytics platform tracking employee sentiment from hire to exit (and beyond). The solution promises responsive, holistic data and predictive modelling capabilities to help leaders iteratively improve their experience. Take a look at an example engagement survey below:
We’re currently onboarding exclusive design partners across industries to collaboratively develop CultureTrak for maximum impact.
If you aspire for your organisation’s employer brand and EVP to be a competitive differentiator that authentically resonates with today’s talent landscape, contact our team to learn more and influence this game-changing solution.
